And the mission briefings are kind of similar. Not only that, but it totally doesn't fit with the action of the game itself. I can respect the decision to shift the focus of the game a little but ultimately it just looks like a bad rip off of the Red Alert approach.

Instead, there's this really awful techno frenzy that totally kills the mood of the game.for me, at least. I was all set for some heart stirring WWII style movies. The first thing that you're confronted with when you venture into the game is the horrible intro movie. But overall, I've been impressed and have high hopes that this will inspire other developers to take a similarly fresh approach. The missions are kind of ambiguous, the large number of units can get confusing and the game tends to drag along now and then. But the game also misses the mark in a few key areas. The scale is epic, the units are really diverse and the graphics are spectacular. I've been impressed with a lot of the things that the game does right. Now the final game has been in my hands for some time now. Sudden Strike looked to change all that with a pure military approach and a scale unsurpassed in the RTS market. Close Combat gives you that chance, but the scale of the battles is far too small. And while Age of Empires was great, it involves a lot of the technology and economy modeling that distracts me from what I really love - moving armies around. With the exception of Close Combat and the Age of Empires series, there's been very little in the RTS world that has realism as a primary goal. Ever since it was first previewed long, long ago, I had high expectations. New heavy artillery units, medics and British-only maps help things along, but perhaps more time should have been spent fixing what little was broken instead of churning out new units that will only confuse those still getting used to the original batch.I've been looking forward to this game for a long time now. In gameplay terms, as are the levels themselves, save for the fact you can now choose your difficulty level.īut like the main game, it's the scale of the battles that will draw people back, and here no one will be disappointed. Which leaves the units, which for the most part are insignificant The new autumn terrain is rather messy, while the new desert environments are perfectly suited to Sudden Strikes big battles.

Line of sight has been improved, with a new General unit that can see far away through binoculars. The excellent interface remains intact, as does the sometimes iffy route-finding.

Unfortunately this add-on is, forgive the cliche, simply more of the same, good and bad.

It helps of course that Sudden Strike was something of a cracker to begin with (perhaps, until Commandos 2 arrives, the best WWII RTS around). And if that wasn't enough, for the price of a lamb bhuna, pilau ric6, naan, poppadoms and two pints of Stella, you also get a mission editor with which to create your own stand-alone missions and campaigns. It highlights the fact that against other add-ons, like Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun - Firestorm for Command And Conquer: Tiberian Sun and Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors for Age of Empires II, SS Forever (a rather unfortunate contraction) offers an unprecedented number of new units, maps and terrain types over which to fight yet more battles set during World War II. As far as expansion packs go, CDV is rather proud of Sudden Strike Forever.
